Dr Anthony Mackie
Clinical Psychologist
B.Ec., B.A.(Hons.), G.Dip. Organisational Change, DPsych (Clinical)
Anthony is a registered Clinical Psychologist, with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Swinburne University. Anthony has a strong interest in working with men and supporting them as they adjust to life’s challenges. He has a particular interest in the science of attachment and bonding, and how this can help build stronger and healthier relationships.
Anthony works from a humanistic and person-centred framework. That means he is interested in the whole person, not just a collection of symptoms. His style is warm, respectful and collaborative, and he tries to understand and respond to the unique complexity within each of us. He draws upon a variety of therapeutic approaches and frameworks in his counselling work, and parents are welcome to bring their baby along to sessions.
Outside of work Anthony is a keen photographer and rock-climber, and loves spending time with his family and in nature.
Emotions and men – Anthony has undertaken substantial training in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), a style of therapy with a strong focus on understanding and working with emotion. He finds this approach particularly helpful in his work with men, as men have often been taught to supress their emotions and ‘just get on with it’. Whilst emotional suppression is useful in certain contexts, it can also lead to difficulties in interpersonal relationships. EFT can be very useful in helping men to better understand and respond to the emotional landscape within themselves, their partners, and their children.
