Towards Parenthood Workshop

Towards Parenthood: Preparing for your New Life with Baby

A 2-hr workshop for soon-to-be and new parents

Congratulations – you’re pregnant!

Are you prepared for parenthood?

Entering into parenthood for the first time is filled with mixed feelings.  There are so many unknowns: some exciting and some anxiety-provoking.  There is a huge focus on the physical changes in pregnancy and an understandable preoccupation with labour and birth.  But once baby is out – then what?

Few of us are prepared for the practical and psychological changes when becoming parents.

Of course, we can’t ever fully predict the impact that any baby will bring, because there are so many factors involved.  The ‘shock of the new’ when baby arrives is inevitable.  But, we can have a go at previewing how things might be.  This can help us to prepare and adjust.

The Towards Parenthood workshop helps you to:

Learn how life will change when you welcome your little bundle into the world

  • Expectations versus realities

Prepare for the emotional adjustments required for parenthood

  • Learn the three core areas of relational change

Strengthen your relationship with your partner and your baby

  • Having a baby is, at core, developing a new relationship with your baby. Learn how to foster that relationship while safeguarding your relationship with your partner

Explore coping strategies to help you transition to your new role

  • Self care is crucial during this phase. Consider ways to balance meeting your needs with the demands of caring for a newborn

Towards Parenthood helps you navigate the unchartered waters of first-time pregnancy and parenthood – we help you find some calm in the storm.  Be guided through this practical, information-based workshop by an experienced psychologist and start preparing for your new life with your baby.

Facilitated by: Dr Bronwyn Leigh, a clinical psychologist, perinatal and infant clinician and early parenting consultant.  Bronwyn is the Director of the Centre for Perinatal Psychology and consults in Fairfield and Ringwood North, Vic.  She has a special interest in the psychological aspects of becoming a parent, the emotional development of infants, and parent-infant relationships. Bronwyn co-authored the book Towards Parenthood: Preparing for the Changes and Challenges of a New Baby.  She loves supporting individuals and couples in the transition from pregnancy to life with a baby.
